How to improve your feedback skills with the SBI method
In today’s working world, effective communication is not just a skill, it’s the starting point for successful leadership. Your ability as a manager to communicate clearly and offer constructive feedback has a direct impact on the productivity and happiness of your team.
The SBI model is one of the most common techniques used by managers to improve their communication, including active listening and one-to-one interviews. Used to improve the quality of feedback given to employees, the SBI (Situation-Behaviour-Impact) model aims to create a favourable, productive and high-performance working environment.
The SBI model makes it possible to examine feedback practices by considering three main points:
- The Situation (S), i.e. the context and specific conditions of the exchange,
- The Behaviour (C) demonstrated by the team member during the exchange (focusing on facts rather than assumptions),
- The Impact (I) and the consequences of the feedback given on the team member’s future motivation and performance.
This structured analysis makes it easier to identify the strengths and areas for improvement in your feedback and to build an action plan to improve your practices.
