Diversity and inclusion in the workspace

Diversity is an important factor in many fields of our everyday life, including the workspace. The term refers to the inclusion of individuals of diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations e.t.c., and goes hand-in-hand with inclusion, meaning the members of the team should feel valued, respected, and truly included, regardless of their individual characteristics.

As a manager, you can make sure you are taking into account diversity and inclusion in many ways:

  • by adopting an open mindset and using a wide range of channels while looking for new applicants
  • by avoiding misconceptions while conducting interviews
  • by assessing the needs of each team member
  • by addressing those needs

But why should you strive to have a diverse and inclusive team? Each individual can offer their unique perspective and experience, leading to improved problem-solving and more creative solutions and ideas.

Extra tips:

  • Assess a team member based on their work skills, not their individual characteristics
  • Do not make assumptions, even if they come from a positive mindset.
