3 tips to help your team find meaning in their work

Meaningful work is when personal values are aligned with organisational goals, creating a sense of purpose and fulfillment. A team that finds its work meaningful is a motivated, productive and effective team.

Every employee should have the chance to do work that is meaningful to them. Managers are therefore doubly concerned by this quest for meaning: for themselves, in order to be more involved in their day-to-day work, but also for their colleagues, in order to drive positive change within their team and their organisation.

Here are three tips for promoting meaningful work and increasing your team’s commitment:

  • Share a clear and inspiring vision: Are you sure that every member of your team has a clear understanding of the purpose of their work and how it contributes to achieving the organisation’s overall goal? Make sure your people have a vision of the bigger picture, so that they can give meaning to their day-to-day tasks and create a sense of common purpose.
  • Promote individual autonomy and empowerment: If your employees are free to make decisions and innovate in their own areas, their sense of responsibility and impact will be strengthened, as will their creativity and personal commitment.
  • Celebrate the team’s successes: Publicly recognising individual contributions strengthens the sense of belonging and motivates team members to continue to invest themselves. This can be done through team meetings, special mentions or symbolic rewards.
